The assembly process includes cutting, stripping, terminating, booting, testing, packaging and shipping. The entire progression from raw material through packaging is under strict quality control–in fact SMP was one of the first wire & cable companies to achieve IATF 16949.
Vertical integration at SMP Mishawaka assures that product quality, with reduced production costs, is maintained in each step of our process. Many ‘just in time' and ‘lean manufacturing' strategies are applied for manufacturing products within short lead times alleviating significant finished goods inventories.
SMP Mishawaka has been molding its own wire boots for nearly twenty years. With sophisticated injection molding equipment, our engineers can carefully monitor carbon content with complete control over the entire manufacturing process. Boot molding has also allowed the wire & cable team to make improvements to original equipment flaws and failures.
Extensive testing at the Mishawaka facility includes SAE and ISO 3808 performance tests, customer specific tests, product performance verification, product benchmarking, and silicone compound testing for tensile, tear, hardness, gravity, durometer and color.
Throughout the Mishawaka plant , a strong effort is made to recycle fluids, metals and all other reusable materials. A comprehensive recycling program includes steel drums, metals, copper, paper, plastic, oil, aluminum and wood products. Standard Motor Products, Inc. understands the need to minimize our impact on the environment and reduce waste for future generations as demonstrated by our ISO 14001 certification. Recently, as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce negative environmental impact as a result of these processes, the Mishawaka plant installed an absorption chiller which uses in-process steam to power the chilled water system resulting in a decrease in electrical usage of ten percent.
